Chickens

Chickens and ducks are included into the backyard fruit garden/vineyard.

I typically rotate egg layers in-and-out based on age and other factors each year. The typical rule of thumb followed is simple, try not to exceed six layers, and get rid of them if they aren't friendly. My backyard contains no roosters, and no aggressive hens. In my opinion, this is the only method you can follow and keep a happy flock co-existing with various ducks.

My two cents:
* you DON'T need a rooster for eggs, but everyone thinks you do
* Rhode Island Reds are too aggressive for small flocks
* Rock breeds are the most reliable layers
* Buff Orpington hens are friendly
* Silkies can get killed by hawks
* Eggs from my hens taste much better than Krogers
* Chicken manure is excellent fertilizer
